Three Bands You Convinced Yourself Were Christian Artists That Weren’t

I was thinking about this today on my way to class. Not quite satirical but mildly entertaining.

Creed- We all fell for it. Don’t even try and lie. The first time you heard “Higher” and saw Scott Stapp throw his arms out you were duped too. The behind the music special didn’t help much either. Just because someone grows up AG and had to write the book of Psalms in its entirety every time they got in trouble does not make them a Christian. Even though the music wasn’t full of curse words and drug references, Stapp’s life sure was. I bought so many wife-beaters because of that guy, what a let down.

Lifehouse- Just because a band sounds, looks, and writes songs like a worship band doesn’t mean they are one. What Lifehouse had going for them was the fact that they could write really ubiquitous lyrics about girls and have a crap load of Christians think they were about God. Lifehouse is second only to Nickleback in rewriting the exact same song over and over again and just changing the lyrics. Hooray for the G and/or E chord progression and singing through your teeth!

MuteMath- I am not a huge music snob, but I do like to do a little research on bands I go to see in concert. A few of MuteMath’s members were formally in a Christian band, weren’t making any money, and formed a new group trying to avoid at all costs a Christian labeling. The lead singer is more of an Atheist than a Christian now. This didn’t detour like 15 people “worshiping” at their concert at the Fine Line a few months ago. So basically they were worshiping an Atheist’s sermon.

I could go on to list acts like Coldplay, U2, etc. But you guys get the idea.

This would be far more entertaining had it been about those bands everyone thought were secular but were Christian all along. Ya know, Slipknot, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, the list goes on.

  2. King of String Says:

Worship leaders across America are removing “Higher” from their song sets, along with “Beautiful Day” by U2, “Control” by Mute Math, and “Clocks” by Coldplay.

  3. 2wp Says:

wait lifehouse isnt a christian band…. better tell those churches to change their names

  4. Ed Rockwell Says:

Pretty sure that the lead guys from Korn, Megadeth and one of the Backstreet Boys went to Christianity though.

Ironically enough, their musical careers ended at about the same time…

  5. Ed Rockwell Says:

Oh, and even though U2 isn’t a Christian band (especially if you’ve ever heard the song “In the Name of Love”), Bono is definitely a Christian…and if he’s not then he’s doing more than most Christians do for the poor and the hungry around the world.

  6. Ed Rockwell Says:

…then again…I might be wrong about the “In the Name of Love” song too…

  7. racethedream Says:

    Charlie Daniels does worship music.

    True story.

  8. lukeskywalker Says:

but bono also wrote a song for an angelina jolie movie. Tomb Raider…. thats pretty lame, and pretty atheistic

  9. Jen Says:

Yeah, I fell for the Creed thing too. I was 20. Gimme a break. That was back when I cared whether my music was “Christian” or “secular”. I’m soooo not into labels now.

  10. Ed Rockwell Says:

Hey man…money is still green. And if he hadn’t written that song, he might not have had as much money to use to help the poor.

And writing a song for Tomb Raider isn’t atheistic…that’s like saying Paul eating with Gentiles was wrong because they were Gentiles and he was a Jew.

  11. racethedream Says:

d00d. Ed. Get the ferret out your butt.

Tomb Raider is far closer to Paganism than atheism anyway. Sheesh. Damn polytheists. . .

  12. not a music major Says:

All those bands suck, not to mention they all sound the same. It makes sense that people thought it was Christian music.

  13. Ed Rockwell Says:

    racistthedream,

There isn’t a ferret in my butt. And to tell you the truth…I saw Tomb Raider once and I don’t remember any of it.

And actually, the term “Pagan” is actually a reference to uneducated, unchurched people of the countryside (farmers) who had their own religious systems set in place. The church branded them as Pagans because it was a good overarching generalized word to lump a bunch of people together who didn’t jive with their views.

At least that’s what I learned from the Da Vinci code.

  14. racethedream Says:

    Polytheism, my friend. Polytheism.

  15. Anonymous Says:

Bono is a Christian he just doesn’t believe in an instituition Christianity bc you’re all a bunch of freakin hypocrites that try to live in your comofortable bubble judging everyone else instead of reaching out to help them

  16. Pearl Inez Says:

whoa, anonymous…biting words there , kiddo….i think we need a time-out to cool off before we post again..hhmm?

  17. Ed Rockwell Says:

Easy to say when you’re…anonymous…how do we know you aren’t the biggest hypocrite of them all?
